Learn how to use elements of design as keys to unlock the beauty and meaning of composition. When starting a painting, understanding and using those tools effectively helps remove roadblocks to higher creativity. Each day, a basic design concept will be covered. For each concept, students will make a small painting or collage. In realistic or non-objective work, the elements of proportion, scale, unity, variety, rhythm, repetition, balance, and emphasis greatly improve our ability to make a work of art that conveys our intended message. How we place our images on a page is more than graphic and pleasing to the eye—it is central to the psychology of painting.
This class is suitable for the beginning student wishing to learn design concepts as well as the more experienced artist seeking to strengthen their understanding of composition.
